Spring Rain and Cherry Blossom
Well over a week ago, the meteorological announcement stated that Shanghai has officially entered into spring season. With daily temperature rising above 10 degree Celsius for five consecutive days, the first of these five days is considered the first day of spring. Apparently, for other cities or regions of China, other standards are adopted in defining the meaning of spring.
Although we are a part of nature, however, other forms of nature are far different in responding to the variables of weather. Via common sense from farming or observation in nature, and later derived poetically, there is a Chinese saying describing the warming temperature of a river during spring is always first detected by those ducks swimming in the river. Nature tells a lot about life.
As a weekly ritual and usually over the non-working weekend, it was an hour out for me to shop for grocery, an inevitable need in life. On the way to the Lotus Grocery Store, and right by a small urban plot in between entrances or exits No. 1 & 2 for MRT Line 2, is the Cherry and Peach Garden. It is 180m by 17.6m in area especially dedicated in year 2000 to enhance the urban environment. At the Cherry and Peach Garden, sakura or cherry flowers blossom ferociously
Over night, it rained. The rain brings freshness and cleanliness to the city. The air smells fresh; everywhere, it looks clean. With drizzling continues in the morning, clouds are brought down to lower level with those taller buildings mystically veiled. The rain also brought down many petals from the bloom, adding much decorative esthetic to the Garden at ground level. Many passers-by hung around the Garden while some others were taking pictures to appreciate and record this short lived beauty on Earth.
The flowering period of sakura is very short. Truly, natural beauty does not last. It is only a state of mind.
